His own compositions, greatly influenced by the works of Wagner, are not often performed today. His notable works include "Symphony on a French Mountain Air"; and a symphonic poem, "Ishtar." Vincent d'Indy influenced many students, including Xian Xinghai, one of the first Chinese to compose in the Western classical tradition. Politically, he was a staunch royalist.
